The unexpected treasures of Brescia

Where: brescia
(Brescia)
Genre: culture   nature

The city of Brescia is located in Lombardy and preserves an artistic heritage perhaps little known but which is rediscovering its splendor thanks to Unesco which since 2011 has included the Santa Giulia complex in the list of world heritage sites. The historic center is small and collected, intertwined with narrow streets and wonderful views. The symbol of the city is the grandiose complex of Santa Giulia and San Salvatore, used as a museum and which tells over 3000 years of the city's history. The route begins with the Church of Santa Maria in Solario inside which you can admire wonderful frescoes and the precious Cross of Desiderius which dates back to the Carolingian era. Continuing inside the complex we find the remains of the Roman quarter with the Domus delle fontane and the Domus di Dioniso, still further on we find the Church of San Salvatore and the Nuns' Choir of the monastery of Santa Giulia with its spectacular frescoes from the 16th century. . Close to the complex is the famous Archaeological Park which is the largest archaeological complex in the region. In this area you can admire what remains of Roman Brescia, therefore the Capitolium, the Sanctuary, the Theater and a section of the decumanus maximus. Other jewels of the city are the Castle, the Church of Santa Maria della Carità, Piazza della Loggia dominated by the Palazzo della Loggia and the Clock Tower, then Piazza della Vittoria and Piazza Paolo VI where we find the two Cathedrals of the city.
