Norman Castle of Squillace

Where: squillace
(Squillace)
Genre: culture

The Norman castle of Squillace is located in the province of Catanzaro and dominates the town of Squillace from the highest point of the hill. The castle was built by the Normans in the 11th century, the primary construction material is granite; during the twelfth century a defensive wall was then built, parallel to the wall there was an open corridor that was used to slow down the enemies. With the passage of time the castle extends and is modified by the hand of Frederick II, then of the Angevins, of the Aragonese up to the Borgias who have made the changes we see today, such as the coat of arms at the entrance and the building that is it was built in conjunction with the marriage between Goffredo Borgia and Sancia D'Aragona to seal the union between the two families. In the castle there are the remains of two warriors, found in a tomb in the castle in 1994, a particular find, because it is quite unusual to find tombs in castles, according to some sources they could in fact be the two brothers of the bishop of Squillace, imprisoned in the castle from the Angevins and probably died during an escape attempt, but we have no certain proof of this.
