Spoleto, city museum

Where: spoleto
(Spoleto)
Genre: culture

Spoleto, a city in the province of Perugia, is known for its history and countless monuments. The medieval towers, the cathedral which with its bell tower proudly displays features of Roman civilization and the early medieval period, the walls that have surrounded the city since the Umbrians, today called 'cyclopean'. These monuments are due to the numerous dominations that followed one another over time, giving the city a strong historical and cultural connotation. The Roman portico, for example, was destroyed and then rebuilt by great architects who came from Urbino and Florence. Although the style of the portico was clearly Roman, these architects rebuilt it according to the art of their time, without ever compromising its beauty or original style. In 1962 Spoleto was transformed into a museum city, thanks to the exhibition called 'Sculptures in the city'. This open-air exhibition had the aim of narrating all the stories lived by the city, from the Umbrians to the Romans, from the Renaissance to Neoclassicism, representing in fact one of the salient episodes of international sculpture of the twentieth century.
