Gubbio, a village of history, nature and culture

Where: gubbio
(Gubbio)
Genre: events    culture   nature   folklore

The traces of the oldest settlements in the Gubbio area date back to the Paleolithic age. How to blame those populations: even today the Gubbio landscape is fascinating, relaxing, wonderful. Located in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines, the city is located at the foot of Mount Ingino and sees the flow of the Camignano and Cavarello streams. If we add the wonderful mountain woods that surround it, it can be said that Gubbio is a pearl surrounded by nature. There are numerous trekking excursions in the area, whether they are directed towards the waterfall located in the Bottaccione Gorge or towards the Hermitage of Sant'Ambrogio (silent medieval pearl surrounded by greenery). It should not be forgotten, however, that the village of Gubbio itself knows how to capture and strike for how it communicates its rich past: in addition to the alleys and streets with medieval profiles, there are dozens and dozens of palaces and churches, all overflowing with history and culture. We mention just a few, but the list could be truly endless. The Palazzo dei Consoli deserves a visit, one of the most impressive public buildings in Italy, with a towering Gothic style and built starting from 1332. Then there are the Palazzo Ducale, the Palazzo Pretorio, the Palazzo del Bargello and the Ranghiasci-Brancaleoni; all are worth a visit, if only for the alternation of styles ranging from neoclassical to gothic, passing through the renaissance. Let's not forget the churches, numerous and all worthy of mention. Here we point out the cathedral of Saints Mariano and Giacomo: large, almost hypnotic for its numerous vaults and stained glass windows. The town can also be experienced through one of its many organized events. We mention the pilgrimage 'Path of San Francesco', about 40 km long and which retraces the path of the saint; remember also the folkloristic event of the Palio della Balestra and (in December) the lighting of the Christmas tree in Gubbio, the largest in the world.
