(Ascoli Piceno)
Genre: events    wine and food   folklore

Ascoli Piceno is a small town in the Marche region, one of the regional capitals, located at the confluence of the Tronto river with the Castellano torrent, in a valley surrounded by the Apennines. Characteristics of the city are the 'rue', narrow streets that form an intricate labyrinth that winds through buildings from the Roman, medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The historic center is almost entirely in travertine and here is the main square, Piazza del Popolo. Among the places of religious interest we remember the Church of San Francesco, the Cathedral of Sant'Emidio, patron saint of the city and the Church of Sant'Agostino. Among the museums, the contemporary art gallery, the picture gallery and the ceramic museum are of great value. Among the most important events it is impossible not to mention the carousel of the Quintana, a very ancient sport that has been rediscovered to relaunch tourism in the city, and which today continues to attract visitors and enthusiasts. In summer, when the event is organized, the city goes back in time with many figures dressed in the costumes of the time, religious ceremonies and parades with great fanfare. There are five sestrieri that compete to win the palio to be held throughout the year, until the next re-enactment. Famous throughout Italy, and also in the world, the Ascoli olive is a typical preparation of this city.
