(Sant'Alessio in Aspromonte)
Genre: useful information

The small town of Sant'Alessio in Aspromonte rises about 600 meters above sea level. Lm Probably its origin is due to the period of the Saracen raids of the year 1000, during which the fugitives created some small urban agglomerations in this area. In ancient times it was called Alessi. Until the sixteenth century the agglomeration consisted of a few poor houses belonging to the inhabitants, devoted almost exclusively to agriculture; from the second half of the 17th century a new town was built around the new Church of the Annunziata. In 1884 the town was hit by a heavy fire which destroyed almost half of it. The town is particularly appreciated for its quiet and for the atmosphere still immersed in the past, as well as for its natural and landscape beauties, as it is totally immersed in the Aspromonte Park. This offers the possibility to walk fascinating routes, from the most comfortable to the longest and most adventurous ones, in perfect symbiosis with nature and the wonderful surrounding landscape, characterized by a luxuriant Mediterranean scrub.
