What to see in Valchiavenna

(Valchiavenna)
Genre: culture   nature   fun   useful information

Set in the Alps, Valchiavenna is an Alpine geographic region crossed by the Mera river and the Liro stream in the Lombardy region; it has a vertical course differently from the direction of the alpine ridge and its conformation is due to the action of the alpine glaciers of the ancient age. The region is besieged by tourists who increasingly want to immerse themselves in the natural paths and admire the beauty of the valley. But what are the highlights not to be missed? Here is a list of 5 things to see in Valchiavenna: -Visit the Acquafraggia waterfalls; generated by the intersection of two valleys originating from the glaciation, the waterfalls with their majestic spectacle leave everyone speechless, even the great Leonardo da Vinci was fascinated by them so much that he cited them in one of his writings. The natural complex also gives the landscape a geological interest. The two large waterfalls are in fact an example of glacial 'U' excavation. A particular flora grows on the rock walls favored by the nebulization of falling water. Of exceptional interest is a rare fern which here finds a perfect habitat for its growth. There are several trails that lead to the waterfalls which are practicable by bike. Inside the park it is possible to stop for a picnic in the designated areas. - Savonno; it is a must if you are near the falls. It is considered a ghost town since it has been uninhabited since 1968. -Montespluga; is an alpine village from which several paths start, including the Via Spluga. -Visit the historic Vertemate Franchi di Piuro building; the building from the sober and elegant outside presents inside furniture and rooms full of frescoes. Divided over two floors, it houses the room where Giosuè Carducci spent the night when he frequented Madesimo to take care of the waters. Each room has specific furnishings and frescoes, for example the zodiac room has frescoed the individual signs of the zodiac and the agricultural activities practiced in the months of the year. -Visit Chiavenna; is a town in the province of Sondrio and resides in the center of the homonymous valley. There are several monuments that are worth visiting such as the collegiate church of San Lorenzo which houses a baptismal font from the 12th century and the precious gospel cover in gold and gems.
