Visit Rovigo

Where: rovigo
(Rovigo)
Genre: culture   useful information

Rovigo is the capital of the Polesine. Today the town is home to about 51700 inhabitants, but its origins are very ancient. In fact, it seems that the area was already inhabited in prehistoric times, then by the Etruscans, and by numerous other populations. The beating heart of the city is Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, where we can admire the Palazzo del Municipio, Palazzo Roverella, the Accademia dei Concordi (founded in 1580) and the Palazzo della Gran Guardia, built during the Austrian domination. However, the places of interest are not concentrated only in this area. Not far away we find the Temple of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso (known as 'La Rotonda'), built in the 16th century by the Venetians, one of the most representative buildings of the city. This Temple was built to house an image of the Virgin believed to be miraculous. Not far away we find the Church of San Francesco and Santa Giustina. In Piazza Matteotti we can find the symbolic towers of Rovigo: Donà and Grimani towers, parts of the Castle, and the Pighin Tower, living and emblematic testimony of the medieval history of Rovigo.
