The beauties of Crotone

Crotone is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Calabria thanks to its great historical and artistic heritage. Its symbolic monument is the Castle, a quadrangular structure with cylindrical towers and pentagonal bastions. It dates back to around 1500 and was built to defend the population from Saracen attacks. The historic center is very suggestive, made up of characteristic alleys and noble palaces. Here is also the magnificent Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta whose construction dates back to the 9th century. The building is in neoclassical style and was completely rebuilt during the 1500s. Inside you can admire artistic works of great value such as two wooden busts representing San Gennaro and San Dionigi. An obligatory stop for those who come to Crotone is the Archaeological Museum where numerous finds are exhibited that testify to the magnificence achieved by the city in the classical era. In particular, the goldsmith's art works are very precious, which still represent one of the craftsmanship activities of excellence in the country.
