Today we are going to discover one of the islands of the Pontine archipelago, along the caste between Rome and Naples; a very small island of just two kilometers: we are talking about Ventotene. Its history has an origin that begins two thousand years ago, with the family of the emperor Augustus who decided to allocate this small rock of the Tyrrhenian Sea to one of his imperial villas. We begin our visit by reaching the Roman Port, entirely made of tuff. Caves were dug under the rock that houses the town which, in ancient times, were used as a warehouse, but today they house very peculiar shops. We also admire the cove where the fishing boats stop: the Pozzillo. We then move on to the Imperial Villa, Villa Giulia. We are enchanted by the remains of Augustus' residence: we are allowed to visit the kitchen, the collection for water distribution, the Roman cisterns, specially built for the collection of rainwater, the swimming pools, the areas reserved for servants; the fishpond, Romanian artificial tanks dug under the Faro cliff and the Santo Stefano prison. We conclude by enjoying some of the typical dishes, with the background of the sea.
