Credaro, the church of San Fermo

Where: credaro
(Credaro)
Genre: culture

Credaro is a town in the province of Bergamo, located at 225 meters above sea level and has 3,500 inhabitants. Its most valuable monument is certainly represented by the church of San Fermo and Rustico. Composed of a single rather irregular hall and covered by exposed beams, it retains some frescoes on the walls, unfortunately very damaged; are notable works dating back to the fifteenth century. They represent saints, bishops and the figure of an enthroned Virgin. The fresco of the triumphal arch is beautiful, which instead surprises for its excellent state of conservation; it consists of an announcing angel, dated 11th century. The church houses two twin apses, dating back to the phase preceding the Romanesque era; well preserved and datable to the 8th century. Along the walls are visible large buttresses, and the polygonal apse of the sixteenth century. The facade has a high central bell tower, quite unusual. The entrance was directly from the bell tower, while the portico and the new side entrances are from the 16th century. The tower has loopholes and three orders of mullioned windows on all four sides.
