The rumpler, a typical game of Val d'Utimo and South Tyrol

(Val d'Ultimo)
Genre: fun   folklore

In the area of Val d'Ultimo, in the province of Bolzano and more generally in South Tyrol, a very beautiful game called 'rumpel' was in use in the last century. After the discovery of some original copies, the game has also been revived in modern times. Its appearance is pleasant as it is made entirely of wood. Seen from above, the game table looks like a doll's house made up of rooms and corridors. The rooms and corridors are separated by non-closed walls, in which oddly shaped doors open. This shape is determined by the protagonist of the game who is a kind of spinning top, with a thin leg and a round head. The player has to wrap a string around the stem of the top and then, positioned at the starting point, he has to spin it whirlwindly. The top remains standing and moves inside the rooms, crossing the rooms that have its shape. There are pins in the rooms. The object of the game is to take them all down, or at least make the highest score of the other competitors.
