Tonara, the nougat village

Where: tonara
(Tonara)
Genre: events    culture   wine and food

The village of Tonara is located on the Gennargentu massif and represents one of the most famous inhabited centers in the area. In addition to the ancient rustic houses (such as the historic Casa Porru), the town hosts some of the most important artisan realities of the entire island. In fact, Tonara is known throughout Sardinia for its production of nougat, carried out according to traditional methods such as the use of honey as a substitute for sugar: this makes the dessert much softer than other preparations. The ideal time to try this excellence is at the Nougat Festival, always organized on Easter Monday. The mountain environment also lends itself to excursions into nature, perhaps directed to archaeological sites such as the 'domus de janas' of Is Forreddos (these are chthonic tombs from the pre-Nuragic era) or the funerary cave (from the Neolithic era) of Pitzu 'e Toni . The remains of the settlements in the locality of Su Nuratze date back to the Nuragic era. Also worth a visit are the waterfalls of Rio Pitzirimasa, immersed in the flora of Tonara, among holm oaks, chestnuts, hazelnuts and hollies; this long list of trees is not surprising since 90% of the municipal area is covered by woods.
