The sanctuaries of Lake Como dedicated to the victims of the plague

(Vercana e Dosso del Liro)
Genre:

In 1630 all of Europe was hit by the black plague, which did not spare even Italy. The northern part was the hardest hit, but the whole peninsula was in unhappy conditions due to the fact that it had found itself on the edge of an empire now in decline. The economic crisis damaged northern Italy as much as the plague, which had been brought within the national borders by the German troops of the lansquenets. Around Lake Como there are numerous chapels and sanctuaries that were created to contain the plague sufferers, to keep their relics safe. Furthermore, it was also intended to establish places of worship for the future. To be interested by the presence of these sacred structures are not only the shores of Lake Como, but also the upper Lario and the Alpine arches. There is one in Vercana, where celebrations and masses take place, especially on the day of the dead. The functions are held by the Alpine group of Vercana. There are also people who bring their objects to this place to consecrate them or for their own beliefs, not only related to the Christian religion.
