The feast of San Giorgio and the almond festival in Vicari

Where: vicari
(Vicari)
Genre: wine and food   folklore

Vicari's patron saint is San Giorgio, and to celebrate him the association in his name has decided to give life to a series of celebrations that also include the almond festival. As for the saint, mystagogical sacred representations are staged in the streets of the town that recall some salient episodes of both life. In particular, the killing of the dragon and martyrdom are recalled, with human and animal figures (especially horses). The almond festival, on the other hand, is a tribute to this typical cultivation of the Vicari area, and includes a large number of sweets that use this type of dried fruit. Among the most typical sweets of the area are the cubbaita, a sort of crunchy almond of Arab origin that is made on a long marble pastry board, and above all the passavolanti. Passavolanti are so called because they were eaten quickly, cooked in the still warm oven of bread, and consist of almonds and egg and very little flour. The festival also includes the white night, the debutante dance and many religious events.
