The cliffs of Roccalbegna.

Where: roccalbegna
(Roccalbegna)
Genre: culture   nature

The village is characterized by geometric streets that align the houses perpendicularly and by two rocky spurs that overturn any concept of statics. Between these two extremes there is the beauty, the balance of an urban planning that comes from afar. On the southernmost slopes of Monte Amiata and surrounded by limestone cliffs, the Aldobrandesca fortress was built in 1200, together with the first houses, for the guard duty. With the Lordship of Siena, the Council of Nove decided to enlarge the locality, intending to bring colonists there and develop agriculture. Siena built the second fortress on the lower spur and it is possible to visit both and admire the view over the village. Walking through the streets and jumping the levels with the ladders you can visit the Church of San Pietro, in Romanesque-Gothic style, with the splayed portal and decorated columns. Inside there are many works including a triptych by Lorenzetti depicting the Madonna and Child, St. Peter and St. Paul and a polychrome wooden crucifix from the 14th century.
