History and beauty of Minturno.

Where: minturno
(Minturno)
Genre: culture

Located on the southern slopes of the Aurunci Mountains, the town surmounts the Gulf of Gaeta, including an area that extends from the promontory of Traetto, to the marina of Minturno and Scauri. Touched by the ancient Via Appia, the ancient Romans restored, at the end of the 1st century BC. C, the Temple named after the Nymph Marica, the creator of beauty, but also the tyrant and perfidious instigator of sea storms. Gaius Mario was the hero who consecrated the promontory, taking refuge on the heights, in 88 d. C. to escape from rival Silla, who sent a Cimbrian slave to chase him. Minturne, its original name, was destroyed by the Lombards who occupied the lands from 580 to 590. The villagers took refuge on the heights and founded Traetto. Attacks and destruction followed one another at the hands of the Hungarians until the territory was initially fiefdom from the Monastery of Montecassino, then under the Colonna and finally under the Carafa. Staying here means finding traces of the controversial and glorious past, as well as enjoying a welcoming and clean coastline. Do not miss a visit to the Church of San Pietro Apostolo dating back to the 9th century. The gabled façade is decorated with a portico with five arches, the third of which is surmounted by the bell tower with three orders of mullioned windows. Inside you can visit the three pointed aisles and the wooden coffered ceiling of 1851 and the painting of the Last Supper by Andrea Sabatini from Salerno.
