Hospitality on the Roman road to the Gauls.

Where: saint-rhemy-en-bosses
(Colle San Bernardo.)
Genre: culture   nature   folklore

The ancient pass was opened by the Romans to reach the Gauls. At an altitude of 2473 m, many wayfarers, traders or pilgrims faced the winter stiffness, which extends to the threshold of summer. The hospice, founded by Bernardo d'Aosta in 1050, is still dedicated to monastic activities such as prayer and work but also the attitude of hospitality and comfort has been pursued for centuries. During the summer, the Himalayan Molossers called San Bernardo dogs live with them and were used for the protection of travelers, for the tracing of the slopes, for mountain rescue. Everything was recorded in the monks' annual volumes. Thanks to their meticulousness we know the history of snow altitudes, meteorological news, those who have been passing by and their destinations. At the Colle you can also visit the Church, built in 1685, with the baroque façade and the black, white and golden altar, stroll around the lake among the gentians and mountain sages, where you can see the ibex jumping in hops on the top of the mountains.
