The Dolina dei Bogomili or Basovizza

Where: trieste
(Trieste)
Genre: useful information

Trieste is a city famous for its numerous artistic, cultural and architectural beauties, but not everyone knows that there are also lesser known places, indeed, not at all indicated in the tourist signs. One of these mysterious places is the so-called Bogomili sinkhole, or Basovizza sinkhole. You can get there easily from the center of Trieste, if you know where to go. You must first go along via del Coroneo, then take via Fabio Severo and continue along via Alfonso Valerio. At this point, take the road to Basovizza, and upon reaching the crossroads, after the church, you have to turn left taking the Ressel path. At 500 meters from the entrance there is a small road that finally leads to the dolina, which is nothing but a natural depression. In the sinkhole there are some stone constructions, walls, stairways and tiers that look like the remains of a sort of amphitheater now completely eaten by vegetation. The name Bogomil dolina is due to the fact that perhaps the Bogomils, who belonged to a heretical sect, met here. However, it could also be a Celtic place, or dating back to the war, refuge of the Austro-Hungarian artillery.
