After the unification of the two municipalities of Barberino di Val d'Elsa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa into a single municipality, called Barberino Tavarnelle, an excavation campaign lasting 3 years was started. The attention of the archaeologists of the San Gallo laboratories has focused on the area near the parish church of San Pietro in Bossolo. The hope is to rediscover the castles of San Pietro and San Giovanni, and to reconstruct the roots of the two municipalities that are united today. During the excavation campaign some interesting findings were made: walls of buildings that seem to date back to the Middle Ages, about 800 years ago. In addition to the houses, objects have also re-emerged, mostly ceramics, which tell the way these people lived, how they cooked and what they ate. The work goes on in layers: each layer is photographed and drawn. All the finds belonging to a single stratum, individually filed, are grouped so that the memory of the exact place where they were found is preserved.
