The church with red columns.

Where: alcamo
(Basilica Santa Maria Assunta.)
Genre: culture

Overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare and at 288 m above sea level, there is the city of Alcamo or al qamah, from the Arabic muddy land. The visit takes place in the Mother Church built in 1330 and restructured in its present form in 1690. With a basilica plan, it contains three naves supported by 14 columns in local red stone. The side walls are decorated with canvases by the Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans and sixteenth-century sculptures by Gaggini. In the Chapel of the Holy Spirit you can admire the paintings of the '400, depicting the scenes of Pentecost and the relics with the sacred thorn. Legend has it that a soldier following the Emperor Charles V gave it to the monks. The Basilica houses the wooden statue of the Madonna dei Miracoli, protector of the city. Dedicated to her are the devotional gifts, which date back to the previous ten centuries, collected in the adjacent museum. The amazing treasure collects gifts and wooden, gilded and decorated subjects, including San Rocco and San Sebastiano, and caskets with jewels and ampoules, given as a gift to the patron mother, by the inhabitants of the city.
