History and things to see in San Mauro Castelverde

Where: san-mauro-castelverde
(San Mauro Castelverde)
Genre: useful information

San Mauro Castelverde is located at 1000 meters above sea level, in the province of Palermo, inside the Madonie Park. Initially it was only called San Mauro, and tradition says that the relics of this saint were brought here by Benedictine monks. In 1862, as there were 22 other municipalities with the same name, the wording Castelverde was added. This would derive from a manuscript which spoke of the castle of a Carolingian nobleman, Pietro Castelverde. In fact, the remains of a castle are there: the city was founded in the Byzantine era, facing the sea and on top of a mountain. A peculiarity of the village is that it is rich in sundials, or sundials, which were once used by farmers and shepherds to mark the time of work and rest. A place to visit in the surroundings of San Mauro Castelverde are the Gorges of Tiberius, a canyon formed 200 million years ago, 450 meters long, rich in ponds and fossils. In San Mauro Castelverde, those who love extreme sports can experience the thrill of the Zip Line, an angel's flight of over a kilometer.
