Sulmona, the city of confetti

Where: sulmona
(Sulmone)
Genre: culture   wine and food

In the heart of Abruzzo, a few steps from the Majella National Park, stands the Sulmona. The history of this center is so long that it is confused with the myth, attributing the foundation of the city to Solimo, companion of Aeneas. There are historical evidences that date back to the Peligni and the Romans, qualifying the town as one of the most important in the region. The historic center can be traced back to the well-organized structure of the Roman settlements, with a cardus as the main street that cuts the city from north to south. This role is covered by Corso Ovidio; this artery runs through the center of the city, the beautiful and very wide Piazza Garibaldi. The square offers a glance that allows you to admire not only the well-maintained historic center, but also the mountain profiles that encase the Peligna Valley. The ancient area is populated by various buildings of medieval origin: the cathedral of San Panfilo (in Baroque style and with a Gothic portal) with the adjoining crypt, in Romanesque style, is worth a visit. The Santissima Annunziata complex has been a national monument since 1902 and consists of a baroque church and a palace dating back to the fifteenth century. The latter also houses the city civic museum. Sulmona is called 'the city of confetti'. In fact, these sweets are produced on site following centuries-old recipes; the preparations can lead to a very wide range of colors and flavors. A journey through the history of this fascinating tradition can be made in the museum dedicated to confectionery, in the ancient Pelino Factory.
