Camerano to discover

Where: camerano
(Camerano)
Genre: culture   nature

Camerano is a town in the Marche region in the province of Ancona; rises 231 meters above sea level and has 7,500 inhabitants. Surely its name immediately evokes the excellent Conero red wine produced in this area, but Camerano is more. An ancient saying of the place says that Camerano is more below than above, and in fact under the historic center there is the best: 900 meters of caves and salt that the wise human hand began to excavate already in pre-Roman times. The origin is uncertain, the use is uncertain; the only certainty is that in all of central Italy there is nothing similar. The hill of Camerano was already known by the Picenes, as can be deduced from the finds kept in the city antiquarium. Camerano is the birthplace of Carlo Maratta, a great seventeenth-century painter. An exceptional find is kept in the town hall: a rare copy of Cicero's 'de philosophia', printed in 1500 by Aldus Manutius. The town has three souls: the beautiful old town where the remarkable Maratti theater stands out; the industrial and commercial area, the Conero area, with its park, promenades and unspoiled nature.
