Where: santa-lucia-del-mela
(Santa lucia del Mela.)
Genre: culture

The village rises on the slopes of the Pelartani Mountains from the peaks of which you can see the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea. The area of the Municipality is surrounded by millenary forests of oaks and giant ferns, where the village stands, full of historic buildings and a retro atmosphere. The ups and downs between the houses, almost bare of the plaster covering the beautiful stones, you can visit the Church of the Annunziata. Dating back to 1410, the façade, consisting of a portal decorated with carved scenes of the Annunciation, is flanked by the crenellated bell tower. Turning through the thousand corners and ravines, you reach the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the mother church, dating back to 1094. The marble portal opens to the artistic collection of canvases and wooden statues, reliquaries and precious urns, of the church clear and illuminated by candelabra pendants. Flowered stone stairs lead to the 1600 Capuchin Church. Inside, you walk down the nave with the paintings and wooden statues to go down to the Crypt, where the mummified bodies of the notables of the city are kept. Finally, on the promontory and in an isolated position, you reach the Castle built by the Normans in 837. Walking inside the walls with the cylindrical tower, you can visit the Church of the Madonna della Neve, with the marble statue of the Saint from 1529.
