Walking around Belluno

Where: belluno
(Belluno)
Genre: culture

Belluno is a city of about 35,500 inhabitants and one of the provincial capitals of the Veneto. The town was built by the ancient Romans around 200 BC but there are traces that indicate that this area was already inhabited a thousand years earlier. Its name has Celtic origins and means 'shining city'. The most important religious building in Belluno is the Cathedral of San Martino built in 1517. The portal in Baroque style is very beautiful and inside you can admire valuable works by artists of the caliber of Jacopo Palma the Younger and Cesare Vecellio. Of the latter in particular, the Altarpiece of San Sebastiano is interesting in which the square adjacent to the cathedral is also represented. One of the symbols of the city is certainly the Porta Dojona named in honor of the bishop Giorgio Doglioni in 1609. Another place that deserves a visit is the Palazzo dei Rettore currently seat of the prefecture with its magnificent Clock Tower. Finally, the Municipal Theater with its neoclassical style is suggestive.
