- the church of San Michele Arcangelo in Pergine Valdarno

Where: pergine-valdarno
(Pergine Valdarno)
Genre: culture

Curiously, in Pergine Valdarno the feast of the patron saint, who is San Michele Arcangelo, is not celebrated on 29 September, which would be the date of the official canon. Here is celebrated on May 8th for a very specific historical reason, because on this date the apparition of the saint on Mount Gargano is remembered. According to some commentators, moreover, the devotion to San Michele testifies to the Lombard origins of the church dedicated to him. The Lombards in fact revered the holy warriors, and St. Michael was seen that he is often depicted with a sword in his hand. Another clue that would suggest a Lombard origin is that once in the square where there is the church of San Michele there was also another church, dedicated to San Giovanni. This was typical of the municipalities in which two faiths coexisted for a certain time, the Catholic and the Longobard. The building should date back to the 7th century and at the time it depended on Pieve a Maiano. Inside there is a baptismal font from 1912 and a chapel dedicated to Mary Immaculate made of pietra serena by the Sestini family of stonecutters.
