The village was built by the Lordship of Siena from 1213 to 1219. The perimeter walls are almost perfectly circular, since, during construction, the level lines of the natural hill were followed. The 14 defensive towers were later lowered when firearms were introduced in the 16th century. For the same reason, earth was accumulated around the ramparts, in order to reduce the area under fire. Only two doors open the way to the citadel. The Porta Franca which allows the pass from Siena and the Porta di San Giovanni in the direction of Florence. The whole round of the walls is walkable and allows you to keep an eye on the Val d'Elsa and the Via Francigena. The verses of Canto XXXI of Dante's Inferno describe the town and declaiming them during the visit makes us really proud because they offer us the mirror of our roots. In the cafes you can taste typical platters of local cold cuts and cheeses, accompanied by homemade bread and a glass of wine. In the month of July the medieval festival takes place, where the inhabitants open the artisan shops and perform duels.
