Erice, a small charming medieval village

Where: erice
(Erice)
Genre: culture   useful information

Perched on the top of the homonymous mountain, today we are in Erice, a small charming medieval village in the province of Trapani. Thanks to its strategic position you can admire the most beautiful views of the salt pans, the city of Trapani and the Egadi islands. Since 2014, the red flag of the most beautiful villages in Italy, at 750 above sea level, a maze of paved streets leads us to squares, palaces, churches and ancient courtyards. Crossing Porta Trapani we can immediately admire the majesty of the cathedral, the most important building in the city as well as the mother church. Opposite, the bell tower rises, once also used as a lookout tower. We then reach the main street, Corso Vittorio Emmanuele, dotted with craft and souvenir shops. Continuing we arrive at the most popular place in the village, the ancient Loggia, animated by coffee tables. Before reaching the most scenic place of the village, we meet two noteworthy churches: the Church of San Giuliano, of Norman foundation and the eighteenth-century Church of San Martino, also Norman, founded by Ruggero the Norman. We end our visit in the most breathtaking area, visiting the Castle of Venus and the garden and the castle of the Balio, both of medieval origins, where we could enjoy a spectacular view.
