Lonigo: the city of wine and conviviality

Where: lonigo
(Lonigo)
Genre: events    culture   nature   wine and food   folklore

Lonigo is a town in the province of Vicenza, located close to the Berici hills. Its economy is based on agriculture and the typical products are rice, cheeses and cured meats, but the wine tradition is of great importance, in fact the city is often defined as the 'city of wine'. A period of great splendor for the city was the Middle Ages, of which some testimonies remain, such as the Calamano castle, or rather the tower, the only survivor, from whose top you can enjoy a beautiful view. The cathedral, the main place of worship, stands in the same place where the castle once stood. Other religious buildings are the old church, and the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli, linked to the miraculous bleeding of a fresco of the Madonna. The work is kept inside the prestigious votive chapel in the church. Next to the chapel an imposing ex voto museum. Typical events of the town is the Lonigo fair which was born as a religious event but today it is a much richer event, linked to trade, gastronomy and wines, as well as crafts and even horses. The twinning with a German town from Bavaria, which is represented in various events with typical costumes and local products, but also at an educational and working level, is very much felt. Among the important historical buildings we remember Palazzo Pisani, today the house of culture, and Villa Pisani, by the architect Palladio.
