The king of the peaks

Where: valtournenche
(Cervino)
Genre: culture   nature   wine and food   useful information

Like the mountains that children draw, the Matterhorn is comparable to a pyramid. The first route was opened in 1865 and since then reaching the summit has always been a gamble, a training ground for life that confronts tenacity and creates a great closeness between the mountaineers who undertake it. At an altitude of 4478 m, the rock is often frozen and snow-covered and the wind becomes more and more freezing, but from up there you are above every altitude, even the clouds to which you can entrust your pride. From the town church you go up to the Carrel hut, the first stage before the most demanding ascent. Here all the equipment for cooking in a homely and intimate atmosphere is placed. In the morning it climbs up to Pic Tyndall at 4240m and finally to Muttherorn at 4488m. Those who return to climbing claim that you never get used to the Matterhorn and that there are always some bad deals, but you can't do without them. During the Christmas period, 11 December, you cannot miss The Lighting of the Tree in Cervinia, with music and entertainment and the torchlight procession on the 30th with a fireworks display and musical entertainment.
