Bressanone, a postcard village in the Isarco Valley

Where: bressanone/brixen
(Bressanone)
Genre: culture   wine and food   fun

Located where the Rienza flows into the Isarco, Bressanone is one of the most fascinating places in South Tyrol. There are traces of this village since its establishment in 901, with the name of Prichsna (this makes clear the root of the current name in German, Brixen). In truth, the area has been populated since the Mesolithic age, with important historical implications in Roman and medieval times. This rich past flows into the very appearance of the city, which is striking for its architecture and for the cobbled streets of the center, giving a postcard view. This is especially true in the Stufles district, where you can still breathe the air of the Middle Ages. The main building of the city is the Cathedral of Maria Assunta, which dominates the most beautiful square in the village. The interior of the building is rich, structured according to the Baroque style and also houses (in addition to wonderfully frescoed walls) the famous major organ, equipped with 3335 pipes. Outside, there is the cloister in Romanesque style and with cross vaults of Gothic derivation; an unmissable stop for any tour of Bressanone. Another historic building in the town is the Hofburg, the Bishop's Palace, which welcomes the curious with its wonderful central courtyard. To reassure you during your visit, Bressanone offers excellent dishes. We recommend the spätzle, traditional Swabian gnocchi seasoned with butter and speck, and then continue with the knodel (dumplings). The aforementioned speck is the flagship of the production of the entire Valle Isarco; we recommend the tasting of Speck Alto Adige DOP. An excellent time to visit the village is the Christmas one, where you can wander among some of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Italy.
