Spiders: how weaving becomes art in Longobucco

Where: longobucco
(Longobucco)
Genre: events    folklore

In Longobucco there is a long textile tradition, which has to do above all with the brides' trousseau. At one time women used to weave on the loom to prepare the household linen that went into the bride's trunk. The highlight was the nuptial blanket, which became a piece of furniture. In bed the new born were presented, in bed the last farewell was made. The blanket was also used during processions, hung from the balconies for votive purposes. The Spiders project was born to revive this tradition. Five young fiber art artists (Camilla Marinoni, Lisa Martignoni, Franco Paternostro, Sophia Ruffini and Mariacarmela Milano) went to Longobucco to talk with the women who taught them the style and techniques of embroidery, sewing, weaving and decoration. The result was a fruitful exchange between tradition and modernity, which resulted in an exhibition also supported by the Pro Loco and the Calabria Region. In this way, one of Longobucco's strongest identity traits can come back to life.
