Downstream of Monte Lacerone and the small village, an association offers contact and excursions on the saddle of the donkey. Knowing and riding the peaceful and sly animal means not only having a different experience but also rediscovering our roots, when everyone could afford a donkey in the courtyard. Riding slowly, or according to the fashion, slowly, we find the time to observe the woods, to hear the roar of the stream, to explore the care that is due to those who bear our weight. From here we can reach the Cappelletta Refuge at 1200 m, the place where San Francesco lived in 1209, or find the Lupetta spring where fresh and therapeutic water flows. If you come for the Christmas holidays, you can relive the living nativity scene as Francis taught, together with Messer Velita, lord of Greccio, in 1223, when the stone houses were similar to the caves of Bethlehem. Not much has changed since then, so why not visit them on a donkey like Mary did? In the Sanctuary you can visit the cave with the 1228 fresco of the Nativity.
