Parma is a provincial capital in Emilia Romagna. It rises 57 meters above sea level and has 180,000 inhabitants. The most representative and famous monuments of the city are certainly found in Piazza Duomo. The Cathedral is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, from the 12th century, in Romanesque-Padano style, boasts a splendid gabled façade, the interior is a Latin cross with three naves, and houses famous works of art by Benedetto Antelami and Correggio. The 13th century bell tower is 65 meters high. Next to the cathedral stands the Baptistery, with an octagonal plan in pink Verona marble, in Romanesque-Gothic style; it is one of the most important medieval monuments in Italy, as it marks the moment of transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style. Antelami began its decoration in 1196. Noteworthy is the square of the fence with the statue dedicated to Parmigianino. Jewel in the Renaissance style is the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, built in 1510, with an elegant interior rich in works of art by Correggio, including the famous cycle of frescoes. Parma has been elected Italian capital of culture for 2020.
