Sarzana, city of history and culture

Where: sarzana
(Sarzana)
Genre: events    culture

Sarzana rises on the foothills of the Apennines. Of ancient origin, the town is reborn in the same territories where the inhabited center of Luni (of Roman origin) once stood. It evolved from a small fortified high medieval village, drawing its lifeblood from the pilgrims and merchants who trafficked along the Via Francigena and Aurelia. In fact, both of these arteries passed through the city. The city will be an important hub in the disputes between the papacy and the empire (even in 1226 Frederick II held his court in this city). The struggles are attested by the large number of fortresses that dominate the city. We start with the Fortress of Sarzanello, not far from the city. It is an imposing defensive structure that is still perfectly open and well preserved. Continue with the Citadel (or Firmafede Fortress); it was the first Sarzanese town stronghold capable of defending the actual inhabited area. Built in 1249, it was strengthened in the fourteenth century by Castruccio Castracani, destroyed by the Florentines and then rebuilt by order of the Medici. In addition to these well-preserved fortresses, Sarzana keeps its historic center intact. Here you can still breathe the flavor of the Middle Ages and time. Among the most interesting events taking place in Sarzana is the Festival of the Mind, dedicated to culture and creativity. This is an exceptional opportunity to hear great personalities and thinkers from Italy and beyond.
