Things to do in Italy > Tuscanian Maremma

Do the patrol around the walls.

(Castello di Capalbio.)
Genre: culture

From the ancient Aurelia you can reach the village in a few minutes. Elected one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, the Rocca is accessed from the double arched door, where the Sienese conquest of 1418 is dated on the plaque and where the Medici coat of arms of 1602 still watches over the reinforced wooden door. The palaces and fortified churches can be placed in this historical context. Along the walls the head of the Emperor Hadrian, which looks out under the Holy Arch, keeps an eye on us as we climb up to the Piazza. Here the Archpriesty of San Nicola and the Church restored in the 15th century meet, where inside you can admire Renaissance frescoes. At the apex of the complex stands the Torrione and Palazzo Cornacchioni where there is still the piano that Puccini played during his stay and, dreaming of his music, you go down to admire the view from Piazza Magenta. From here you can make the rounds in the different sections of the two levels of walkway under the edge of the walls, immersing yourself in history, in the bond of loyalty to the Rocca and in the tensions due to conflicts with other cities.
