Journey through the Crete Senesi and the medieval villages that surround it

(Crete Senesi)
Genre: culture   nature   useful information

The territory of the Crete Senesi extends in the southern part of the city of Siena and includes several medium-small municipalities: Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d'Asso. The name derives from the clay present in the soil that gives it a characteristic gray-blue color which together with the rolling hills and oaks or cypresses, composes a unique, evocative and fascinating landscape that attracts many tourists every year. Often, to enjoy the beauties of the area and the various surrounding villages, the journey by car is the best and most comfortable choice. The various municipalities are scattered so as to leave almost deserted expanses in the middle. The first stop is Monteroni d'Arbia with its mill dating back to 1400, which represents a bit the center of the city since both the ancient and the modern part have developed around it. Second stop Buonconvento, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, where it is still possible to admire the medieval walls. The medieval atmosphere is very well preserved and therefore fascinating. Third stage Asciano, with the imposing Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, a Benedictine monastery dating back to 1300, surrounded by dense and quiet nature.
