Sepino, a glorious past

Where: sepino
(Sepino)
Genre: culture

Sepino is a Molise municipality in the province of Campobasso; it rises 698 meters above sea level and has 2,100 inhabitants. It is a village where there is a very interesting and surprising archaeological park from the Roman era. In fact, Sepino owes its fame to the Roman city that rises a few kilometers away: Saepinum, although the local inhabitants continue to call it with the Lombard name of Altilia, demonstrating that the shame of that defeat with which the Samnite city was conquered by the Romans, it has never been digested, although 2,300 years have passed. Saepinum is the clear demonstration of the extraordinary constructive and architectural skills that the Romans possessed; Saepinum fully respects the classical canons of Roman town planning with a lot of thistle and decumanus the main streets that formed 4 right angles in the center of the city. You can still admire the Tammaro gate, access to the city. This magical archaeological area is without fences and free, no entrance fee is paid; it is certainly underestimated and unfairly out of the big tourist circuits, although it allows you to admire the great harmony and Roman urban perfection. Perhaps the cause lies in the lack of adequate communication routes.
