(Bassano del Grappa)
Genre: culture   fun   useful information

The beautiful tree-lined town, cut by the Brenta River invites you to stroll through the central streets, where you can admire works of art and rest in the lush gardens along the river. The circular urban structure traces the pre-existence of two walls in which famous sculptors have modeled the doors and palaces such as Palladio, Canova, Da Ponte, Marinoli, Dall'Acqua. The noble palaces tell the architectural ideals of the great artists up to the Squares where you can visit the Churches of San Giovanni, dating back to the 1300s and the Church of San Francesco from 1100, built by vote of Ezzelino II the Balbo returning from the Holy Land. The fortress of the homonymous family can be visited with the walls and watchtowers, located on a small promontory. The visit continues to Piazza Garibaldi where the Civic tower rises, built to reinforce the city walls in 1312. Climbing increasingly narrow flights of stairs you conquer the roof from where you can admire an extraordinary landscape of the city and the Alps. The heart of the city however, it is the Ponte Vecchio, symbol of the First World War in which the Alpine regiments passed over the Brenta and a small museum recalls the events. The American Red Cross was also stationed nearby where the American writer served as a driver. He became very fond of Bassano, returning often to set some famous novels.
