Canosa di Puglia: one of the most important archaeological sites in the whole region

Canosa di Puglia is one of the main archaeological centers of Puglia and in addition to the sites in the area, many finds from the area are preserved all over the world, including one in the British Museum. Some remains are visible in the municipal villa, in addition to the archaeological sites of the princely tombs of the Dauni, the hypogea. Another valuable archaeological area is the baptistery of San Giovanni, but it is impossible not to mention the much better known Archaeological Park of San Leucio, where the archaeological museum is also located. It is also known for being the birthplace of the famous actor Lino Banfi. The main square is Piazza Vittorio Veneto where the Cathedral of San Sabino stands, commissioned by the Normans Roberto il Guiscardo and by his son Boemondo, the latter buried in a mausoleum near the cathedral, erected after 1111, which is accessed from the right side of the Cathedral. Near the church stands the Lembo Theater, the hub of Canosa's cultural events. The second most important square is Piazza della Repubblica where the church of San Francesco and the city palace which is the seat of the town hall stand. Another noteworthy place of worship is the Carmelo church. A castle was built for military purposes which today is in ruins but which in the past was the site of several important historical events.
