A Roman villa found in Campofilone

Where: campofilone
(Campofilone)
Genre: culture

During the connection works of the Snam gas pipeline for the service area on the Adriatic motorway, an exceptional archaeological find was made in Campofilone in 2018. Little by little a Roman villa of the imperial era of great beauty and wealth came to light. There are several areas that the superintendent has identified. There is the funeral, where children were found buried with a dog, which was supposed to have the task of ferrying the little souls to the afterlife. Then there is the spa area, with fragments of mosaic still visible and intact. Finally, there is the production area, where the wine and oil produced in the territory of the villa were crammed. This last area is characterized by large pools that are lowered compared to the rest of the building. The evident opulence of the building has brought back some old local legends that speak of this hill as the 'valley of the kings'. Probably this denomination is due to the extreme agricultural and productive richness of this land.
