The magical Duino Castle

Where: duino-aurisina
(Castello di Duino)
Genre: culture

Duino is a charming town of 8600 inhabitants in the province of Trieste. Monument appreciated all over the world and symbol of the country is the Castle. This building is famous for having hosted prominent historical figures such as the writer Gabriele D'Annunzio, Princess Sissi and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Not far from the new structure there are the ruins of the old Castle which is said to have been inhabited by a lady who was thrown from the tower by her jealous husband. According to legend, the woman was transformed into a white rock from the sky before crashing in order to avoid the pain she would feel. The new Castle was built in 1300 by Ugone di Duino to replace the old one. Inside, 18 rooms can be visited which house works of great value and precious documents. The Palladian staircase and the collection of musical instruments among which the piano played by Franz Liszt stands out. Also recommended are the panoramic view from the terrace of the tower and the walk in the park where there is a great variety of floral species. Finally, the Castle bunker and the nearby Rilke Path are suggestive.
