The small church of Saints Gottardo and Colombano in Arlate di Calco

Genre: culture

Arlate is a fraction of Calco, and here is a small church which is considered one of the most important in the Adda valley. Its position is panoramic: it is in fact located on a hill dominating the surroundings. Although it is not known exactly when its construction began, it is thought that the primitive nucleus of the sacred building can be settled around the year 1000. At that time it was part of the Benedictine possessions and housed nuns. There are several ancient documents that attest to the existence of the church between the 10th and 11th centuries. The place began to lose importance in the fifteenth century, when it was annexed to the monastery of Milan. In 1681 it became a parish church in the name of Saints Gottardo and Colombano. With the confiscation of ecclesiastical assets by the French, the end of the Cluniac order in the territory was marked. The church is very simple: it has 3 naves and few decorations apart from the fresco in the central apse which shows Christ Pantocrator. The restorations were carried out in 1969.
