The delights of the upper Po Valley

Where: savignano-sul-panaro
(Savignano sul Panaro)
Genre: culture   fun   folklore   useful information

In the province of Modena stands one of the most authentic medieval villages in Italy. It is Savignano sul Panaro (name that derives from the river that crosses it), located in the heart of the Po Valley. Despite being a fairly populated town (about 10,000 inhabitants), Savignano is to all intents and purposes a modest reality, simple and beautiful in its authenticity. It stands out for the medieval elements that characterize the upper part: the village is, first of all, surrounded by impetuous double walls and dominated by a bell tower, symbol of the place. All this surrounds a castle dating back to 1016: the castle of Savignano. It is accessible to anyone and faithfully recalls the atmosphere of a medieval castle. A moat, a drawbridge and a tower with a historic fresco from 600 AD make Savignano's history even more intense. The place is also distinguished by its food and wine: it is possible to taste a good Romagna wine, season the food with DOP or IGP vinegar, try the authentic Parmigiano Reggiano and, above all, taste the Prosciutto di Modena. Visitors to Savignano can also combine history with pleasure by exploring the lower part of the city; featuring modern amenities, internationally renowned bars and shops. In short, Savignano sul Panaro perfectly combines the historical dimension of the village with the pleasant present to be experienced.
