Montecchio is an Umbrian town in the province of Terni; it rises 391 meters above sea level and has 1,600 inhabitants. Montecchio is a delightful fortified rural village, built around the twelfth century with the town that develops in rings around the historic center. Located on a hill overlooking the Tiber valley, Montecchio preserves its medieval charm intact with alleys, squares, the light tone of the stone, the mighty walls with the attached defense towers. With a vaguely elliptical shape, the village is among the most beautiful and best preserved in the region. Surrounded by flourishing olive groves and dense woods, its landscape is vivid and lush in the summer while it becomes painted orange and red during the autumn. A long fraction of Baschi, it became an independent municipality only in 1948. There are many monuments and places of interest that it offers: the church of Santa Maria Assunta, the castle, the necropolis of the valley of San Lorenzo, Palazzo Ancajani with its museum of civilization peasant.
