Cavriglia is a town of 9000 inhabitants in the province of Arezzo. It is located in an area of great tourist interest being a short distance from the Chianti hills and the main art cities of Tuscany. There are numerous historic buildings in the town such as the Castello di Montaio and the Cassero in the hamlet of Montegonzi. Very beautiful is also the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista dating back to the eleventh century which houses a museum where you can admire valuable works of sacred art. In other churches in the area there are masterpieces such as oil on canvas depicting the Miracle of the Snow and the painting of the Crucifixion of Christ. Great historical importance also have Villa Castiglioncello, the Municipal Theater and the Town Hall. The town's economy for many years was based on the nearby thermoelectric power station and lignite mines. Today, however, attempts are made to exploit renewable energy sources and two large photovoltaic systems have been built for this purpose. Other places absolutely to visit are the Forte di Monte Domenici, the Museum of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni and the Parish churches of San Pancrazio and Montaio. Nature lovers, on the other hand, must absolutely take a nice excursion in the Cavriglia Park which is home to various exotic animals. There are also numerous accommodation facilities, in particular the farmhouses where the welcome is always warm.
