Promises of love and friendship, on the feast of St. John the Baptist

Where: carloforte
(Carloforte)
Genre: wine and food   fun   folklore

We are in Sardinia, more precisely in Carloforte. In particular, we are talking about the feast of St. John the Baptist which, like every year, is celebrated on the night between 23 and 24 June. This event welcomes tens of hundreds of people, coming from the various villages of the big island. A very important tradition for the Carlofortini, closely linked to this ancient celebration. In ancient times, unlike other religious celebrations, it was customary to consecrate promises of love and friendship to the Saint. In particular, lovers who, even today, decide to promise each other eternal love in front of the statue of St. John the Baptist, before exchanging the oath, go to the fields to collect St. John's wort for him. The party took place with the performances of different local folk groups who traditionally perform while walking through the main streets of the cities. In addition you can taste some of the typical local products, accompanied, of course, by the good Canonau.
