Aliano and the confinement of Carlo Levi

Where: aliano
(Aliano)
Genre: culture

Aliano is a small town in the province of Matera. Its territory is very large in proportion to the number of inhabitants and is characterized by gullies, that is, the furrows that are formed on clayey soils by means of the action of sun and rain. The flat areas of the town are planted with orchards and vegetables while the mountain areas are rich in woods and breeding is practiced there. In the past there were several kilns in the town with which bricks were made using the clay of which the land is rich. In the center of the town is the Pinacoteca which preserves important works by Carlo Levi made during his confinement in Basilicata. Initially the anti-fascist writer had been confined to Grassano but to prevent him from escaping he was taken to Aliano as there were few communication routes here at the time. The house where he lived has been restored and can be visited. Inside you can view a multimedia film that tells the main events and the moods of the Turin artist during his confinement.
