Through the ancient passages of Nepi

Where: nepi
(Vie tagliate di Nepi)
Genre: culture   nature

Inserted in the territory of the Agro Falisco, the vie cave represent one of the most important examples of road layout of the pre-Roman era. Huge tuffaceous blocks were carved and dug to open accesses between plateaus and eliminate the strong differences in height, facilitating the exchange of goods. With the minimum help of double-edged axes, the Tagliate were equipped with lateral cavities to drain the rainwater, avoiding flooding the roadway. In pre-Roman times the Falisci lived here, an ethnic group of mysterious origin but, like the Etruscans, with an engineering culture and linked to the cult of the dead. The design of the road network is not linear, but forms a labyrinth and along it we encounter crossroads. The route was subsequently dedicated to Christianity when crosses or votive statuettes were placed in the niches and in the small neighboring caves to protect pilgrims. The natural environment of Nepi is known for its waterways and by spending your holidays here you can go trekking along the via Cave up to the Picchio, Pizzo and Cavaterra waterfalls.
